Fox Hunt Logger is a tool for logging listening points in an Amateur Radio Fox Hunt. Rather than recording your data manually, Fox Hunt Logger captures your GPS location automatically and records date/time, signal strength, bearing, radio and antenna settings, and attenuation — then plots everything on an interactive Google Map so you can visualize your hunt trail in real time.
Who can access
You must be a licensed Amateur Radio Operator to use Fox Hunt Logger. To request an account, use the Contact Us page. Provide your name, email address, and callsign. The site administrator will create your account and assign the appropriate access level.
Add a new location record
Fox Hunt Logger is designed to be used on a smartphone or tablet in the field. Use Chrome (recommended) and make sure location services are enabled for the browser — the form captures your GPS coordinates automatically when it loads.
Complete the following fields for each waypoint stop:
- Fox ID — select which fox transmitter you are hunting. Be sure you have the correct Fox ID selected before submitting each record.
- Bearing — your estimated bearing to the fox, in degrees (0–360°).
- Signal Strength — use the slider to record the received signal level (S0 through S9+).
- Attenuator — your current attenuator setting.
- Frequency Offset — any frequency shift in use.
- Radio Model — select your radio from the list.
- Antenna — select the antenna you are using.
- Notes — optional free-form notes for this stop.
- Status — mark the entry type:
- Start Hunt — your starting location.
- Hunt Waypoint — an intermediate bearing/signal reading.
- Fox Found — the fox location.
The Timestamp, Latitude, and Longitude fields are filled in automatically — you do not need to enter them.
Tip: Fox Hunt Logger remembers your last-used Fox ID, Radio Model, and Antenna selections between sessions. On your next visit those fields will be pre-filled, so you can start logging immediately.
Submit the record
When your fields are complete, press Record Location Entry. The record is saved and the map below the form updates to show your current hunt trail.
Add the next location
Move to your next listening spot. When you are ready to log again, press Update Timestamp/Location — this refreshes your GPS coordinates and timestamp. Adjust your Bearing, Signal Strength, and any other fields that have changed, then press Record Location Entry again.
Visualizing your hunt
After each submission the map shows all of your logged waypoints for the current hunt (all entries for today’s date and your selected Fox ID), connected by a blue route line.
Markers are color-coded by status:
- Green — Start Hunt
- Blue — Hunt Waypoint
- Red — Fox Found
Bearing display
Once the map is loaded, a Show Bearings button and a Beam Width (°) field appear below the map. Clicking Show Bearings switches the display from the route polyline to a bearing visualization for each waypoint:
- Beam Width = 0° — draws a single ray from each waypoint outward along your recorded bearing, extending to the edge of the map. Use this when you have a precise bearing.
- Beam Width 1–90° — draws a filled wedge (sector) centered on your bearing, ±½ the entered width. Use this to represent your antenna’s beam width or your margin of error. The sector is filled with a semi-transparent color matching the waypoint’s status color.
Changing the Beam Width value while bearing display is active redraws all shapes immediately. Fox Found waypoints are excluded from the bearing display — only their map marker is shown.
Click Show Bearings again to return to the route line view.
Marker information
Click any map marker to open a popup with the full details for that waypoint: location number, coordinates, timestamp, bearing, signal strength, attenuator setting, frequency offset, radio model, antenna, status, and notes.
Access previous hunts
A date selector below the map lets you load any previous hunt session recorded under your callsign. Select a date and the map reloads with the trail for that day. All bearing display controls work the same way for historical hunts.
Access the Log
The Fox Hunt Log page provides a full-featured table of all your recorded entries. Records are sortable by any column and grouped by Fox ID and date. Administrators can view any hunter’s records by appending ?callsign=WXYZ to the Log page URL.
The table includes the following columns: Fox ID, Callsign, Timestamp, Latitude, Longitude, Bearing, Signal Strength, Attenuator, Frequency Offset, Radio, Antenna, Notes, Status.
Use the Search Builder to filter your records by any combination of fields — date range, fox, status, signal strength, and more.
Editing a log record
Most fields can be edited directly in the table by clicking the cell. A popup editor is also available for full record editing. The following fields can be changed: Fox ID, Bearing, Signal Strength, Attenuator, Frequency Offset, Radio, Antenna, Notes, and Status.
Callsign, Timestamp, and GPS coordinates are not editable in the Log table.
Selecting a row in the Log table and clicking the map button opens a modal map showing the complete hunt trail for that record’s fox and date, using the same color-coded markers.
Exporting records
Click the Excel or CSV button above the Log table to download your records. Exports include full GPS coordinate resolution even though the table display rounds coordinates to four decimal places.
